Olive is an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region.Olive trees are slow to mature, requiring ten years to start to bear fruit, and 30 years for a sizable crop to be produced.

Olive oil is an extremely versatile oil. It is a favourite on both dry and irritated skin; as it is very soothing and carries disinfecting and healing properties. It has been proven to be very beneficial for rheumatic conditions and protects the skin and body against harmful free-radical cell damage.

Due to its high percentage of oleic acid within olive oil, the use of olive oil on skin allows the natural breathing process and regulate sebum production of the skin. Olive oil is a major source of plant-based squalene, which helps lubricate skin, prevents moisture loss, functions as a natural emollient and protective agent.

Olive oil is quite legendary since it has been used over the centuries for multiple purposes. Throughout history, olive oil was the most important of all the vegetable oils. Kings were anointed with olive oil and olive oil was part of religious ceremonies since biblical times. Traditionally, olive oil is the first vegetal oil that was (and still being) made into olive soaps and has been eaten and used for stomach disorders, stimulates bile production, promotes pancreatic secretions and may even protect against stomach ulcers.

Did you know?

The first pressing of the finest selected olives is called extra virgin oil, which is considered the top grade. Virgin oil is considered the second-best grade, and pure olive oil is the third. The pure olive oil is extracted from the pulp and pits left over from the other pressings; it is generally produced by the use of heat and high pressure, solvents, bleaching, and deodorizing.

Herbal Folk Tradition

Historically, olive oil has been the base for anointing oils. Olive oil is commonly used in body lotions, soaps and hair products. In the ancient Middle East, olive trees were extremely valuable that the oil was used as a form of currency.

As a folk remedy, the leaves were used to lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels. In the Mediterranean, olive leaf preparations are a common treatment for gout.

All parts of the olive tree have been used in traditional medicine. The seed oil is taken internally as a laxative and applied topically to relieve inflammation. Decoctions/infusions of the dried leaves and fruits are used to treat diarrhoea, respiratory and urinary tract infections, stomach and intestinal diseases and oral hygiene. Olive oil mixed with lemon juice were also used to help clear gallstones.
