It is strongly encouraged for parents to read the full details for the safety of your children. 

This informative research is written by Dr. Chad J. Issinghoff, who is a pediatrician in Hutchinson, Kansas and is affiliated with Summit Surgical.

1. Adults, babies and children should not ingest EO, certain EOs are toxic when ingested.

2. Dilution is very important for ALL EO, even in water baths.

3. EO should not be used in or around the nose of children, it is suggested to massage the feet which is the safest application of EO.

4. Slowly introduce one EO at a time, watch for signs of reaction which will usually occur in the first 15 - 30 minutes.

5. Do not use EO on babies less than 3 months of age because their skin is permeable and very sensitive.

Safe for use

Hydrosols are a much gentler and safer option for babies, where essential oils can't be used.


Safe for topical/diffusion on babies 3+ months: 

Chamomile, Dill, Lavender, Blue Yarrow.

EO should not exceed 0.2% of the recipe; 1-2 drops EO per ounce of base/carrier oil.


Safe for topical/diffusion on babies 6+ months:  

Bergamot, Carrot Seed, Atlas/Virginia Cedarwood, Citronella (small amount topically only) , Coriander, Cypress, Fir Needle, Geranium, Grapefruit, Helichrysum, Lemon*, Mandarin, Neroli, Palma Rosa, Petitgrain, Pine, Ravensara, Rosalina, Rose Otto, Sandalwood, Spruce, Sweet Orange, Tangerine, Tea Tree.

EO should not exceed 0.5% of the recipe; 3-5 drops EO per ounce of base/carrier oil.


*Lemon is safe for diffusion. Though this is safe for topical application, sweet orange is suggested instead, because it's less harsh on the skin. If cold pressed rather than steam distilled, this essential oil is a potential photosensitizer. 


Safe for topical/diffusion on children 2+ years: 
Lemon Basil, Sweet Basil, Benzoin, Cassia (DIFFUSION ONLY), Clary Sage, Copaiba Balsam, Frankincense, Garlic (DIFFUSION ONLY), Ginger (small amount topically only), Hyssop, Juniper Berry, Lemongrass (small amount topically only), Lime, Melissa/Lemon Balm, Myrrh, Oregano, Sweet Marjoram, Patchouli, Spearmint, Lemon Tea tree, Thyme (small amount topically only), Turmeric, Lemon Verbena, Vetiver, Valerian, Ylang Ylang.
EO should not exceed 1% of the recipe; 10 drops EO per ounce of base/carrier oil.

Safe for topical/diffusion on children 6+ years: Anise/Aniseed (small amount topically only), Anise Star (small amount topically only), Cajeput, Cardamom (small amount topically only), Cornmint, Fennel (sweet and bitter), Laurel Leaf/Bay Laurel, Spanish Marjoram, Niaouli, Nutmeg (small amount topically only), Peppermint (small amount topically only), Sage (Greek and white).
EO should not exceed 2% of the recipe; 20 drops EO per ounce of base/carrier oil.
Avoid in using 


Avoid all usage on children: Birch (sweet), Wintergreen.

Avoid all usage on children under 2: Hyssop, Massoia

Avoid topical use on children under 2: Basil (lemon), Benzoin, Black seed, Cassia, Clove Bud, Clove Leaf, Clove Stem, Ginger Lily, Garlic, Laurel Leaf, Lemongrass, Lemon Leaf/ Lemon Petitgrain, May Chang, Melissa/Lemon Balm, Myrtle (lemon)/Sweet Verbena, Oakmoss, Opopanax, Oregano, Peru Balsam, Saffron, Sage (wild mountain), Savory, Tea Leaf/Black Tea,
Tea Tree (lemon-scented), Treemoss, Tuberose, Turpentine, Verbena (lemon), Ylang Ylang.

Avoid all usage on children under 6: Anise/Aniseed, Anise (star), Cajuput, Cardamon, Cornmint, Fennel (bitter), Fennel (sweet), Galangal (lesser), Ho Leaf/Ravintsara, Marjoram (Spanish), Bay Laurel, Myrtle (red), Myrtle (aniseed), Niaouli, Peppermint, Rosemary, Rambiazana, Sage (Greek), Sage (white), Sanna, Saro.

Avoid all usage on children under 10: All species of Eucalyptus, all species of Rosemary, *Thieves blend.

Thieves blend should be avoided in children under 10 years. All of the anti-germ type Thieves blends of essential oils contain eucalyptus, rosemary, clove, cinnamon bark, and lemon. The eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils should be avoided in children under ten years of age. The clove essential oil shouldn't be used topically on children under 2 years of age. Cinnamon bark essential oil should be avoided for dermal use in all ages, as it is too irritating to the skin.
