The argan tree has a very important environmental effect of the south west of Morocco. It provides shelter and food for both humans and animals. The tree’s deep roots help prevent desertification. It also provides shade for other agricultural products. The argan tree helps prevent soil erosion and replenish groundwater.

For generations, the indigenous people of Morocco, also known as the Berbers. have been pressing argan nuts to extract the precious liquid gold and used it as a dietary supplement, as a wound healer and rash reliever, and a skin and hair nutrition.

With more than 80% unsaturated fatty acids, argan oil has a formidable restorative and regenerative action on skin. Unrefined, cold-pressed organic argan oil is highly rich in vitamin E, sterols and phenolic compounds, and it also has antioxidant properties to combat early ageing and sagging skin, including stretch marks as it helps improves the elasticity of skin. The use of argan oil also directly influences the levels of free radicals in your body. Free radicals can cause cancer and other chronic diseases by causing healthy cells to mutate. The high linoleic acid content in argan oil helps to reduce inflammation caused by acne, while helping heal damaged skin cells and reducing sebum levels.

The most popular use of argan oil is hair and scalp care. Applying directly onto your hair can be a quick and effective remedy to dry hair, frizzes and split ends. Argan oil helps protect the follicle beds, and improve the shine and overall appearance of hair quality.

We use organic argan oil in our hair and scalp care formulation in MERMAID MOISTURE.

Did you know?
The argan trees grow only in one region of Morocco, the southwest area around Essaouira and Agadir. There are plenty of goats in Morocco that climb up onto argan trees to eat the fruits off the branches.

Tip: When you shake a bottle of argan, bubbles shouldn’t form at the top. If there are bubbles then there’s a very good chance it has been diluted. Also when you refrigerate pure argan oil, it will solidify and form little crystal fragments even after thawing (which is completely natural and does not affect quality), however refined/processed argan oil remains as clear liquid.

Through this co-operative; income, healthcare and education has been provided to the women and their families.

Herbal Folk Tradition
Argan is an evergreen tree native to Morocco. Argan trees are found in dry soils. It is tolerant of drought and high heat. The tree is also known as Moroccan iron-wood tree.
Berber women have produced argan oil for their consumption and for traditional Moroccan medicine. The shell cracking and kernel extraction have been done by hand for centuries. There are three layers to an argan seed. The outside is a tough skin that covers a fleshy middle and inside is a nut with one to three kernels inside. The fleshy parts are removed from the seed and it’s often used as an animal feed. Next, the nut itself has to be cracked. The mechanisation of this process is still impossible today making this task the most time-consuming labour-intensive step of the process.
