Avocado oil has an impressive percentage (a whooping 11%!) of unsaponifable compounds, such as vitamins A, B, and E, proteins, and amino acids, and especially large amounts of vitamin D and potassium, as well as a small amount of the phospholipid lecithin.

With 20% essential unsaturated linoleic acid and a generous 12% of rare palmitoleic acid, it nourishes skin and supports the health of the stratum corneum. Avocado oil helps increases water-soluble collagen content in the middle layer of skin, the dermis. When our skin is lacking soluble collagen, the skin appears aged and thin. The phytosterol content of avocado oil supports the collagen and skin structures, helping prevent age spots and cell wall weakening, while calming inflammation, regenerating tissues, and protecting the barrier functions of the skin.

On top of that, avocado is also one of several oils high in carotenoids that provide natural protection against effects of ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Most avocado oils sold commercially are refined avocado oils and are odourless and light green or golden in colour, with many of its precious phytocompounds stripped away during the refining process for further valuable use in the cosmetic industry. This unrefined avocado oil is thick and deep green in colour with the smell of avocado literally.

Did you know?

The unripe avocado fruit is said to be poisonous, but when fully ripened, it has the highest protein content of any fruit. Avocados have been recommended for a person to eat three to five fruits daily to help inflamed areas, muscle and joint problems, digestion, to regulate the bowels, as a liver and gall bladder cleanser, and contributes to the overall well-being of the body.

Herbal Folk Tradition

The avocado tree likely originated in the highlands bridging south-central Mexico and Guatamala. The avocado tree also has a long history of cultivation in Central and South America, likely beginning as early as 5,000 BC.

Avocados were highly esteemed by the Aztecs and Mayans. The fruit was used for stomach upsets, ulcers, to regulate menstruation, and topically placed to heal skin bruises, burns, and irritations. In Latin America, the fresh kernels are eaten to help the liver and regulate blood sugar.

The plant was introduced to Spain in 1601, Indonesia around 1750, Mauritius in 1780, Brazil in 1809, the United States mainland in 1825, South Africa and Australia in the late 19th century, and the Ottoman Empire in 1908 - which is where VIZU sources from, modern day Turkiye.
