Sesame seed oil has been cultivated in India for over 5000 years. It is probably the oldest crop grown for its oil. Records of the production of sesame seeds date back to 1600 B.C and sesame was included on a list of Egyptian medicinal preparations recorded on papyrus dated about 1550 B.C. Ayurveda medicine uses this oil extensively, and the ancient Ebers Papyrus of Egypt also includes sesame in the list of medicines.

Sesame oil is a natural anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and a potent anti-oxidant oil that is able to carry healing properties to the capillaries at the lowest skin layers. It is a cell growth regulator, has anti-cancer properties, and also has a small amount of natural SPF which protects the skin against UV radiation. Sesame oil has a lovely texture that absorbs very well into the skin. It is able to modulate the production of sebum, which is very useful for people who are suffering from acne, congested skin and those of oily / combi skintypes.

In addition, a dermatology research report found that sesame oil showed a chemopreventive effect in a murine model of skin cancer with two-stage carcinogenesis. Its constituent, sesamol, has also been demonstrated to play a role in chemoprevention.

In another clinical study by Shamloo et al., topical application of sesame oil was shown to lower the severity of pain and reduce the frequency of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use in patients with limb trauma. Because of its powerful pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, sesame seed oil is one of the ingredients used in MUSCLE CARE and ARTHRITIS formulations.

Did you know?

This is unrefined and untoasted/unroasted original sesame seed oil, not the fragrant roasted sesame oil that we use in Asian culinary. The unrefined original sesame seed oil is very mildly scented - smells neutral, slightly musty-bitter and not much taste.

Herbal Folk Tradition

Women in ancient Babylonia used sesame seeds and honey to increase their vitality for lovemaking and fertility.

In Oriental medicine, a tea from the seeds is consumed 2-3 times daily to promote an abundant supply of milk in nursing mothers, improve eyesight, and darken the hair.

In China, the seeds are cooked in water and made into a soup to relieve toothaches and swollen gums. A paste from the seeds is recommended for hemorrhoids and to heal sores. Sesame oil has been used in traditional Taiwanese medicine to relieve the inflammatory pain of joints and wounds.

In Latin America, the powdered seeds made into a tea is taken to help nursing women with the flow of breast milk. Sesame oil is also taken as a nerve tonic and to relieve muscle and joint aches.
