Patchouli is native to tropical Asia. In Asia, patchouli is used for snakebite, as an insect repellent, for menstrual discomforts, colds, nausea, abdominal cramps, and headache.
The essential oil produced by this herb has stimulating and strengthening properties, which can help skin tissues to regenerate and also improving scar tissues and stretch marks. It also revitalises and softens ageing skin and fine lines; thus reducing wrinkles. Its anti-septic quality also makes patchouli essential oil effective in treating problematic acne skin.

The oil improves with age, becoming sweeter and milder the longer it matures. Because the oil makes a great base note, it is used in more than one out of three perfume blends. It is often used neat as a natural men's perfume and is also a traditional aphrodisiac. Patchouli essential oil is also very useful as a masking agent for unpleasant smells. The aroma of patchouli essential oil helps to dispel nervousness, stress and anxiety.
The colour of the essential oil is determined by the type of metal used in the distillation process. If the oil is produced in a stainless steel container, the colour of the oil will be light. If the oil is distilled in an iron vessel, the colour will be darker due to the iron leeching into the oil.
Patchouli oil is traditionally used in the East to scent linen and clothes. It is also believed to help prevent the spread of diseases.
The Arabs used patchouli to repel fleas and lice from their bedding. In the Philippines, an infusion of the leaves is taken for menstrual cramps. In Latin America, a leaf tea is taken for flu, colds and congestion. In India, patchouli is used to scent inks. In China, Japan and Malaysia, the leaves are used to treat colds, headaches, nausea, diarrhoea, halitosis and abdominal pain. It is also used as an antidote against snake bites.
In the Victorian era, patchouli leaves were stashed between cashmere shawls so as to protect against moths.
