Boswellia serrata
Frankincense resin has been considered throughout the ages to have a wealth of skin and health supporting properties.
This particular species of Frankincense is often used by yoga instructors, naturopaths and other healers to evoke mindfulness and balance. When diffused at home, it provides protection for you and your family, encouraging healthy moods.
It is particularly encouraged for anxiety, nervous and stress related conditions. Frankincense has been researched to show that it has the ability to slow down and deepen breaths.
There are numerous species and varieties of frankincense trees, including boswellia serrata in India, boswellia carterii in East Africa and China, boswellia frereana in Somalia, and boswellia sacra in Arabia, each producing a slightly different type of resin. Differences in soil and climate create more diversity in the resins, even within the same species.
Frankincense is a resin and oil that has been used for centuries for meditation and spiritual practices. It is used as an incense in India, China and then introduced to the West by the Churches. According to historical records, the Bible was likely referring to the Boswellia Serrata variety of Frankincense, as one of the gifts presented to infant Christ, along with Gold and Myrrh.
In ancient Egypt, Frankincense was used in cosmetics, perfumes and also rejuvenating face masks. This resin was also used medicinally to treat syphilis, rheumatism, respiratory and urinary tracts, skin diseases, digestive and nervous ailments.
Meditation blend
- Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Angelica, Fennel, Palo santo
- Choose any of these 2 ingredients and combine 1 drop of each onto a handkerchief or into a diffuser. Take a few breaths to inhale the aroma of these 2 EOs.

Anti-ageing face oil for sensitive skin
- Add 5 drops of Frankincense EO and 5 drops of lavender CO2 into 15ml of red raspberry CO2 and 15ml rosehip CO2.
- Shake well and use it for both day and night after cleansing and toning.

ROBINS RESINS PLUS has stated that Boswellia serrata essential oil and CO2 extract may have a problem with those on blood thinning medication and those who have blood or heart problems. This effect may be due to presence of Estragole, also known as Methylchavicol, in the oil. According to Essential oil Safety second edition Robert Tissurand/Rodney Young, p 553, "Estragole have an in vitro antiplatelet effect. This effect is compared to diluted aspirin solution".
